Lunar Month Chart and Duaa for Sighting Crescent Moon

Learning about the moon phases is a useful activity.  In the past, we've learned about the 8 moon phases and how to identify them by sight and name. Making a moon observation journal and recording the appearance daily is a great way to see how the moon looks throughout the Islamic month.

But I was always also looking for a printable that already showed what the moon looked like each day of the lunar month.  I came across one online and I thought it would be great to post up on our Ramadan bulletin board this year. I included it in a board display and decided to include the duaa for sighting the crescent moon.

I wrote in numbers corresponding to each day of the lunar month  (in the Northern hemisphere, I think you would have to go counter-clockwise for the southern hemisphere????)

The duaa for sighting the crescent moon graphics/text was taken from a reference sheet in my Ramadan Organizer:

Moon Phases Resources

Ramadan is an excellent opportunity to learn about the phases of the moon since its beginning and end (as well as for other Islamic months) is based upon the phases of the moon. Here are some resources to aid your studies:

Moon Phase Diagram

I stumbled across this chart and I love it! I added the day numbers and it's perfect to show how the moon looks throughout the lunar month. You can visit my Pinterest pin to get the link to download it from.

I made a few more printables to go with it to hang up on our Ramadan Bulletin Board. It includes the duaa for sighting the crescent moon of the new month.

        Moon Phases Notebooking Page

I decided on the fly to go over the phases of the moon yesterday with my 10 year old son. So of course I didn't have any visuals or anything, so I had to create my own as we went along (I'm obviously no artist, but it got the job done):

Then, I decided to work up a more lasting page to capture what we learned.

Then I decided to add in ayaat about the moon and its phases for us to read and reflect upon. They could also be used for copywork.

        Cookie Ingredients
        1/2 cup granulated sugar
        1/2 cup brown sugar
        1/2 cup shortening
        1 egg
        2 cups cake flour
3 heaping tablespoons cocoa powder – the better the powder the better the cookie
        1 teaspoon salt
        1/2 teaspoon baking soda
        1/2 teaspoon baking powder
        1 cup milk

        Cookie Preparation
        1. Cream the sugar, brown sugar, and shortening.
        2. Add egg and mix until combined.
        3. In a separate bowl, stir together flour, cocoa, salt, baking soda, and baking powder until cocoa is distributed throughout.
        4. Add this to the wet ingredients and alternate with milk a little at a time and mix until thoroughly combined. This mixture will resemble a thick cake batter.
        5. Scoop and drop onto lined cookie sheet. If you shake each cookie slightly is will allow the batter to settle down.
        6. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes and remove from oven. Before placing on a wire rack to cool let the cookies sit on the pan for a minute or two.

        FROSTING INGREDIENTS
4 tablespoons (1/2 stick) unsalted butter
        1/4 teaspoon salt
        2-1/2 cups confectioners’ sugar
        3 tablespoons hot milk
        1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 ounce bittersweet chocolate, melted (reserve this for the chocolate frosting)

        FROSTING PREPARATION
        1. Combine all ingredients except the cocoa.
        2. Beat until smooth.
        3. Divide this mixture in half.
        4. Add melted chocolate to half of the frosting and stir well.
        5. Keeping  the frosting slightly warmer than room temperature allows for easier spreading.

        (No baking)
Measure the following ingredients into a big, big bowl:
        1/2 cup wheat germ
        1-1/2 cups peanut butter
        1-1/2 cups honey
        3 cups dried milk
        3/4 cup graham cracker crumbs
Mix everything together first with a wooden spoon. Now use your hands to shape the dough into small round balls or moons. Or you can shape crescent moons too.
Roll each moon in powdered sugar. They are ready to eat!
If there are any left over, keep them in a covered bowl in the refrigerator.
        Makes about 5 dozen moons.

        Make your own moon telescopes!

Make a telescope to observe the different phases of the moon before and during Ramadan. Make a simple cardboard tube telescope or get techie and make a real one.
